The Need:

Teaching English in ErbilAmong the thousands of Iraqi Christians who fled ISIS are high school students. Whose education has been interrupted or compromised by life in temporary camps. In their final year of school, these IDP (internally displaced person) students must pass the government exams, or they will not be able to enter any university.
The Catholic University in Erbil has a particular mission to help these students pass English, the required subject that is most challenging for many. They have had many grammar classes but can hardly speak a few sentences. What they need is an immersion experience with fluent English speakers.

The Solution:

The Summer English Academy (SEA) is an intensive English immersion course, which provides opportunities for personal growth, serious work and fun. Its primary objectives are to enable students to immerse themselves in an English speaking community in order to become fluent English speakers and to learn good teamwork and responsibility. The SEA also provides a tremendous opportunity for our students to meet people from foreign countries and to gain a rich cultural experience.

When

Who: 90 students in the 12th grade, and volunteer teachers, staff and mentors

Teaching English in Erbil, Iraq

The Summer English Academy 2017 needs volunteers.

The month-long program offers a chance to get to know Iraqi Christian youth, and give them hope and skills for the difficult challenges facing this ancient country.

  • No teaching experience or knowledge of any language besides English is necessary.
  • All costs in Iraq (housing, meals, local) are covered by the program. Volunteers only need to find transportation to Erbil (the capital of Kurdistan-Iraq served by many airlines.
  • Free 30-day visa at the airport for citizens of US, Canada, EU, Australia).

The deadline for applying to volunteer for the program is April 30, 2017.
